Sweet dried fennel seed (Foeniculum vulgare), aromatic and licorice-like.
Traditionally used in herbalism: A sweet, anise-scented seed and one of the great carminatives — traditionally chewed or brewed after meals to ease bloating, gas, and colic, and taken as a gentle expectorant for the chest. Soothing enough for traditional baby 'gripe' waters.
A little lore: A herb of protection, courage, and purification — hung at doors and windows to ward off harm.
Close to home: Partly — fennel grows in Ontario as a summer annual, but needs a long, warm season to ripen its seed.
In your cup & cauldron: Steep as a tea, or carry in protection sachets.
